bluebanza weekend

The day started with glorious fresh veggies, herbs and flowers in Waltham (thank you shoutout to SM for the farmshare donation!) then proceeded to Northborough for the fattest blueberries you ever met in your life! These aren't the wild bluebies of Maine (which are fabulous in their own right); these puppies are like small bowling balls- very delicious bowling balls. We went crazy picking them and went home with a small mountain of blue delight. The day also involved a large number of blueberry donuts from the farm kitchen and a visit to see the farm babies.

and a HAPPY BIRTHDAY shoutout to E!! ;)

bikin' fool

I finally got to ride my new bike-- 3 times now!! It was raining forever, then I went out of town, then it was raining more... it was very satisfying to finally get to ride it out in the big wide world.

It was also scary! I think the last time I really rode a bike was when I was about 10 years old. I feel pretty wobbly like a baby horse just out of the stall and onto the race track. The streets of Boston and their parked cars and their driving cars looming down on me are pretty nerve-racking (I hate left turns!) and I timed myself today coming to work, and I'm no longer convinced riding a bike saves me any time. By the time I get it out of my house and down the stairs, by the time I remember to roll up my pant leg and by the time I navigate all the traffic, by the time I fumble awkwardly with the lock as I chain my bike up in the bike cage, by the time I stroll into work... well today I saved a total of maybe 3 minutes. maybe.

But riding a bike is exhilarating and it makes me feel cool, so I'm eager to increase my confidence on the road. So far, every time I ride, I'm convinced I will not live through the experience. Work is almost over. We'll see if I make it home!

(ps- I made it. And that route was better.)

saturday mainea

a few highlights:

Damariscotta, ME

I got 2nd place in my new age category. Erin didn't place since she's still in the kiddie group with all the fast young'uns. I got $5 toward lunch.

The middens. Basically the trash heaps of the native americans from 1000-2200 yrs ago. Enormous piles of oyster shells and other discarded stuff (such as broken pottery, bones...). Now a lot of soil has covered it and mixed in and tons of vegetation and trees grow on it so you don't really get a sense of how expansive these rubbish heaps are except that the ground is all oyster shells.

One of the pride and joys of the Maine State Aquarium in Boothbay Harbor, the blue lobster. The also had a half and half lobster (blue and orange), an orange lobster and a 23-pound lobster.

Another pride and joy of the Maine State Aquarium: the dogfish. I got to pet a shark!

My prize lunch. :)

The attack-speed fish, revisited. (Belfast, ME)

New Belfast buddies.

The day ended with a free rotisserie chicken from the supermarket. It was the end of the day and they were giving them away! It was soooo delicious.
