fire alarms

at work, we've gotten some emails lately about fire alarms being tested in the near future, so when the fire alarm went off I was a little surprised because I didn't think horns were supposed to be sounded during working hours. I shut my door, which subdued the noise substantially, but soon the incessant honking seemed just as loud and persistent as before and started to make me a little nervous. Finally, I wandered into the hallway, and lucky for me my boss and someone from the team were apparently discussing the matter. I asked them what the deal was, but apparently my other teammate had called my boss and said there was actually a fire in one of the connected buildings! so we grabbed our coats and my teammate and I were heading out (we ditched our boss!) but just as we were exiting our floor we saw people coming up the stairwell, so we scurried back in before they could see us and scold us for not coming out when the alarm first sounded. I stopped by my bosses office and let him know that people were returning, and he said, "sometimes it pays to be slow!"
the whole thing was rather amusing and definitely broke up my tedious afternoon in which I ran out of things to do.
